A Wine Lover’s Guide From Shack in the Dunes

When I escape to Shack in the Dunes, my time is always a balance between slow mornings by the sea and afternoons discovering the incredible wines our region in Pipers Brook, Tasmania is known for. There’s just something about the Tamar Valley, the cool climate, the rolling hills, the passion of the people behind the wines… that makes each visit unforgettable.

I’ve been lucky enough to explore every nearby cellar door (and more), and over time I’ve gathered a list of personal favourites. These are the places I simply can’t miss when I’m staying at the shack. If you’re planning your own trip, consider this your guide to some of the most beautiful vineyards within reach of Weymouth.

House Of Arras Vineyard in Piper's Brook Tasmania

House Of Arras, 40 Baxters Rd, Pipers River TAS 7252

House of Arras

When I want to taste something truly world-class, I make my way to House of Arras. Ed Carr, their winemaker, is nothing short of a genius when it comes to crafting sparkling wine. The name “Arras” means rich tapestry, which feels fitting because each glass weaves together complexity, finesse, and the cool-climate character of Tasmania.

Today, House of Arras holds the title of Australia’s most awarded sparkling wine brand, and their reputation speaks for itself. Tastings are a joy here, with options ranging from a casual flight to in-depth masterclasses for those wanting to dig deeper into the craft.

Pipers Brook Vineyard in Pipers Brook Tasmania

Pipers Brook Vineyard, 1216 Pipers Brook Rd, Pipers Brook TAS 7254

Pipers Brook Vineyard

Driving into Pipers Brook feels grand. There’s about a kilometre of winding road through the vines before you reach the estate. It’s one of Tasmania’s largest and most established vineyards, with a legacy that’s shaped the region.

Nadines at Pipers Brook, 1216 Pipers Brook Rd, Pipers Brook TAS 7254

The cellar door is now operated by Nadine’s at Pipers, and it’s one of my go-to spots for a relaxed lunch. Nadine’s menu is made of the most of fresh Tasmanian produce, and her seafood chowder is legendary. Platters and takeaway options are also available, making this a great spot to settle in with a glass in hand and soak in the wonderful view.

Clover Hill Vineyard, near Pipers Brook Tasmania

Clover Hill Wines, 60 Clover Hill Rd, Lebrina TAS 7254

Clover Hill Wines

For me, Clover Hill is as much about the experience as the wine. Their award-winning sparkling is poured inside a breathtaking architecturally designed cellar door that feels open, elegant, and connected to the vines outside.

There’s something for everyone here. Guided tastings start at $25, there’s a winter pruning masterclass, and even a lesson in the principles of Pinot Noir. But my favourite experience is their omakase dining, held on weekends. You sit back with a sparkling tasting while the chef creates a surprise multi-course lunch for $100. Trust me… it’s worth letting go of control and seeing what magic they bring to your table.

Jansz picnic by the lake in Pipers Brook Tasmania

Jasnz Tasmania, 1216B Pipers Brook Rd, Pipers Brook TAS 7254

Jansz Tasmania

Jansz, another sparkling icon. Their cellar door overlooks a serene lake and garden, creating a calm backdrop for tasting their premium cuvée. This is sparkling wine with heritage, style, and a true Tasmanian identity.

Here you’ll find generous cheese and produce platters to pair with your tasting, and if you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the winemaking team in action at their facility just next door.

Sinapius Cellar Door in Pipers Brook Tasmania

Sinapius Wines, 4232 Bridport Rd, Pipers Brook TAS 7254

Sinapius Wines

f I had to choose just one boutique vineyard to recommend, Sinapius would be it. This family-owned cellar door feels like stepping into a fairytale garden. The wines are crafted with care, the tastings are deeply personal, and the passion of the owners shines through every pour.

Their Pinot Noir is my absolute favourite in the Tamar, and sustainability is at the heart of everything they do. It’s small, intimate, and unforgettable… the kind of place you want to tell your closest friends about (but also keep secret so it stays just as special, shhhh).

Delamere Vineyard in Pipers Brook Tasmania

Delamere Vineyard, 4238 Bridport Rd, Pipers Brook TAS 7254

Delamere Vineyard

Just next door is Delamere, another boutique gem. Their tastings start from $20 and run for about 45 minutes, but the experience extends far beyond the glass. You can pick your own picnic from their pantry filled with local cheeses, cured meats, and artisan crackers, then take it outside to feast on the lawn.

It’s rustic, relaxed, and even dog-friendly, so it’s a cellar door that always feels welcoming.

Dalrymple Vineyards in Pipers Brook Tasmania

Dalrymple Vineyards, 1337 Pipers Brook Rd, Pipers Brook TAS 7254

Dalrymple Vineyards

Perched on a hillside, Dalrymple is smaller and more secluded than some of its neighbours, but that’s part of its charm. The tasting room is cosy, and here you’ll discover the award-winning wines of winemaker Peter Caldwell. The views across the vineyards make every sip feel even more special.

Apogee Tasmania, near Pipers Brook Tasmania

Apogee Tasmania, 1083 Golconda Rd, Lebrina TAS 7254

Apogee Tasmania

For something a little more exclusive, Apogee Tasmania offers premium sparkling and still wines in a single-vineyard setting. The quality here is outstanding, and the wines are limited, so it feels like a privilege to enjoy them right where they’re made.

Plan Your Wine Journey

If you’d like to map out your own wine adventure, Wine Tasmania and the Tamar Valley Wine Route are both excellent resources. From opening times and driving routes to upcoming events, you’ll find everything you need to plan your cellar door visits.

And here’s one last piece of advice: always call ahead. Tastings, tours, and dining experiences often change with the seasons, and booking in advance ensures you don’t miss out.

Shack In The Dunes Tasmania, 5 Major St, Weymouth TAS 7252

The Perfect Pairing: Tasmanian Wine Adventures + Shack in the Dunes

After a day spent among vineyards, there’s nothing I love more than returning to the shack, lighting the fire, and opening a bottle I picked up along the way. It’s a reminder of why I love this part of Tasmania so much… wild beauty, slow rhythms, and a glass of something special to toast the day.
